A Call to Action: Implementing Magnet Links in QNAP's Download Station

The absence of support for magnet links in QNAP's Download Station has long been a point of contention among users. While the company has been asleep at the wheel regarding this issue, competitors such as Synology, Asus, and Buffalo have already implemented magnet link support in their respective download stations.

As someone who has struggled with the limitations of QNAP's Download Station, I can attest to the frustration that comes with not being able to use magnet links. Recently, I was forced to remove the max download quota from my settings, which resulted in a processor load of over 90%. Even with the quota removed, the results were the same – with 10 downloads, the processor utilization peaked at an average of 57%.

To make matters worse, limiting the download speed to 1200Kb/s max was necessary to prevent the system from becoming unresponsive. Despite these workarounds, I still experienced high processor usage and memory consumption (25.1 MB).

The lack of magnet link support is not only inconvenient but also raises questions about QNAP's priorities. Why has it taken so long for them to implement this feature? Meanwhile, their competitors have already addressed the issue, leaving QNAP lagging behind.

In my case, I even had 10 torrents in the queue, and the processor utilization never reached 80%. However, when Transmission is disabled, the processor usage returns to normal. It's clear that something is amiss with Download Station.

To add insult to injury, accessing the QNAP via the web becomes impossible due to constant processor utilization between 80% and 100%.

Fortunately, there is a solution available – the Transmission QPKG and remote Transmission UI. By installing this package and setting Firefox to open magnet links using Transmission, I was able to experience faster downloading speeds than ever before.

As Markv so aptly put it, 'A lot of people have been wanting this (since 2009.)' It's time for QNAP to take heed of their users' requests and implement magnet link support in Download Station. Until then, alternatives like Transmission remain a viable solution.
